Newsome Signs Bill for Gender Neutral School Bathrooms

Public schools around California will be required to have gender-neutral bathrooms by 2026. Governor Newsom signed a bill this past weekend that makes California the first state in the nation to require gender-neutral bathrooms at schools statewide. Under the new law, schools have until July 2026 to have gender-neutral bathrooms on campus. The legislation was among several bills aimed at helping LGBTQ+ children and teens around California.

Chico PD Arrest Teen in BB Gun Shooting

Chico Police have arrested an 18 yr old for shooting at someone with a bb gun ..the incident happend on OakWay park At around 6:40 p.m. The victim reportedly told dispatchers they were being shot at by a passenger inside a red Chevrolet Malibu sedan. According to police, officers responded to the area and stopped the suspect vehicle. Once stopped, police say they removed all occupants, including 18-year-old Landon Ruggles. Officers reportedly searched the vehicle and found a BB-style air-gun and determined Ruggles was the shooter

DEMS WANT WANT TO KEEP TRUMP OFF CALIF BALLOT

California lawmakers are asking the state Attorney General to remove Donald Trump from the ballot. They say his alleged role in the 2021 Capitol riot amounts to a violation of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The post-Civil War amendment says that no one who has taken an oath of office to defend the Constitution shall be allowed to hold public office if they are found to have "engaged in insurrection or rebellion." Nine Democrats have sent a letter to Attorney General Rob Bonta, who is also a Democrat, to seek the court's opinion about the validity of their claim.

2 TEENS CHARGED ASSAULT CARJACKING

The Butte County District Attorney’s office today filed charges against two Chico teenagers for a violent carjacking and earlier unrelated robbery from last Friday, September 15, 2023. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the juveniles, ages 16 and 17, are accused of the carjacking and assault of a 68-year-old resident of Chico in the victim’s driveway in the 1200 block of Whitewood Way in Chico at approximately 10:00 p.m. The juveniles then lead officers in a pursuit in north Chico that ended after officers deployed spike strips to disable the vehicle. The teens were captured and will be in court today to face charges

BODY FOUND IN BIG CHICO CREEK

Tuesday MORNING Chico Police Officers were flagged down by citizens in the 1300 block of Bidwell Ave. about a deceased person located in Big Chico Creek. The reporting party discovered the subject floating face down in the waterway. Officers confirmed the subject was deceased. No obvious signs of foul play were located at the scene. The identity of the decedent is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification

Kilauea Erupts on Big Island

Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, began erupting Sunday after a two-month pause, displaying glowing lava that is a safe distance from people and structures in a national park on the Big Island. The Hawaii Volcano Observatory says the eruption was observed in the afternoon at the summit of Kilauea. The observatory says gases released by the eruption will cause volcanic smog downwind of Kilauea. Kilauea, Hawaii's second largest volcano, erupted from September 2021 until last December. A 2018 Kilauea eruption destroyed more than 700 homes.

Housing Prices Rise in State

In California, even traditionally less expensive inland areas are becoming less affordable. Rising prices, driven by demand from coastal Californians seeking cheaper properties, have put housing out of reach for many with limited means. According to the Council for Community and Economic Research, four of the top ten most expensive urban areas in the US are located in California. Housing costs are the main driver of the state's high cost of living, which is 42-percent more expensive than the nationwide average. Despite this, California continues to attract people, and remote workers are now considering cities beyond the state's priciest areas.

Fuel Mix Up disable Firefighting equipment in Del Norte County

A fuel mix-up at the Gasquet base of the Smith River Fire Complex caused emergency vehicle malfunctions on Friday The USFS reports that the mistake OCCURED on Thursday, September 7th, when a fuel vendor filled one of the fuel tenders at Gasquet's base camp with the incorrect fuel type. An investigation into the mix-up found that, between Thursday and Friday, 42 vehicles had received enough incorrect fuel to have a negative effect. Offcials say it did not hamper firefighting... Local tow trucks are working to retrieve 24 disabled vehicles from the fireline.

Hand Count Voting Bill awaiting Newsome's Signature

California election reform bill drafted after Shasta County Supervisors voted to shift to hand counting ballots will head to the governor's desk. AB969 was passed by the Assembly Friday after being approved by the Senate. Governor Gavin Newsom will now decide if it will become law. The bill would limit hand-counting to elections with fewer than a thousand registered voters.

Biden Admin Cancels Alaska Oil Leases

The Biden administration has canceled the remaining seven oil and gas leases in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, overturning sales held in the Trump administration's waning days and angering Republicans. The administration also proposed stronger protections against development on 13 million acres in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska. The Department of Interior's decision to cancel the leases comes after the Biden administration disappointed environmental groups earlier this year by approving the Willow oil project in the petroleum reserve. Litigation over the approval of that project is pending.

Lawmakers pass bill Gender Affirming in Custody Battles

California lawmakers have passed legislation requiring judges to consider whether a parent affirms their child's gender identity in custody and visitation proceedings. The legislation is one of several bills lawmakers want to see signed into law offering more protections for LGBTQ+ children. The state Senate passed a bill to seal records for a gender change petition of a minor. Lawmakers are running up against a mid-September deadline to pass bills for the year.

2 Arrested for Oroville Drive By Shooting

Two people were arrested by the Oroville Police Department (OPD) in connection to a drive-by shooting with help from recently installed license plate reader cameras. The shooting happened on Friday night, just before midnight, in the 2500 block of Yard Street in Oroville. The Victim was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his upper chest. The owner of the Vehicle , Corlos Vaslomoff was found and arrested thanks to the cameras. a 17 year old turned himself in to Police..both booked into Butte Co Jail..

Oroville Man gets Life in Prison

An Oroville man was sentenced to life in prison by a Butte County judge after he was convicted by a jury last month for attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. He had also pleaded guilty after his trial of attempting to intimidate witnesses during the trial. Peter was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with an additional 39 years to life after he serves those 20 years. Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said the jury took less than two hours to return guilty verdicts on all charges and special allegations.

Paradise Prepares for Another Siren Test

Paradise officials say another Early Warning Siren test is set for Saturday at Noon.. the tests are held the first Saturday of the month.. 18 towers are now operational.. Town officials say there are 3 more towers still being worked on so there will be a total of 21 towers...They say that should be Sometime in September

Woman Injured in early Am Chico Apartment Fire

A Woman was transported to Enloe with injuries stemming from an early morning apartment fire in a complex on Sheridan Avenue and East Lindo Ave . She was found unconscious outside the back door of the apartment engulfed in flames.. Crews were able to contain the blaze quickly... No word on the condition or extent of her injuries

CA Expensive Cost of Living

It is no secret it costs a lot to live in California. From real estate to food and gasoline, prices are high. But is California the most expensive place to live in the United States? According to a new study from GoBankingRates.com, the answer is "no." The personal finance website figured out how much it costs in each state to live comfortably. California came in at number three with a little more than 80-thousand dollars a year, on average. The cheapest place in the country to live is Mississippi where you can get by on a little less than 46-thousand. Massachusetts is more expensive than California at about 88 grand per year, but the number one spot goes to Hawaii. There you need to make somewhere north of 112-thousand dollars.

Chico Announces Special Election over Annexation

The City of Chico has set a date for a special election to decide if the Chico Canyon Road area will be annexed and incorporated within city jurisdiction. Ballots will be mailed to residents who live on and around Chico Canyon Road at the beginning of September. A "yes" vote on the measure will annex the area into the City of Chico. A "no" vote opposes the annexation proposal.
