Lake Oroville Has Seen A Slight Drop

The reservoir is now at 95 percent capacity. For the past several weeks the lake has been around 96 percent, but the lake level has dropped about 4 feet. According to water officials, the reservoir is at 113 percent of normal for this time of the year. 

 

An Orland Man Is Arrested After A DUI Collision

31-year-old Juan Orsua Jr. was reportedly driving his Chevy 15 hundred pickup northbound on County Road H before 8 pm Saturday when he drifted onto the gravel shoulder. He then overcorrected while attempting to get back on the road. According to the CHP, the truck skidded across the roadway striking a power pole and shearing it at the base. Orsua reportedly tried to drive away but wasn't able to so he allegedly ran off. Officers caught up with him, however and he was arrested and booked into the Glenn County Jail for verious charges.

 

More Teachers Have Been Hired In Chico Schools

The School Board is bringing on 50 new teachers for the next school year. Some were hired to fill new positions while others were hired to fill vacancies due to teachers retiring. The district says that up to 30 percent of its teachers are expected to retire in the next four years.

 

A Northern California Congressman Wants To Modernize State's Water Management Policies

3rd District Congressman John Garamendi of Fairfield has introduced legislation that will fully fund infrasturcture to maximize efficeincy that will include real-time monitoring of endangered fish to assure their protection while at the sametime maximizing water deliveries. The bill will also provide short-term relief to communities hardest hit by the state's drought. 
 
California lawmakers in Congress have reportedly been trying for the last three years to produce a plan to that would deal with the state's drought, but with little success.  

Water Is On The Agenda For Butte County Supervisors Tuesday

Supervisors will decide to whether to direct staff to begin the process of implementing, locally the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. In 2015 the supervisors approved having the county act as local groundwater sustainability agency. Reports indicate that this is from a state law that requires these agencies develop plans in the next 6 years that will include measurable objectives and enforceable targets.   

 

Magalia Woman Posing As A Caregiver Arrested For Identity Theft

 37-year-old Connie Ogle was hired as a caregiver for an 82-year-old woman. It was soon discovered that someone had opened multiple credit cards in the woman's name. Investigators believe that Ogle had allegedly accessed the victim's mail and stole personal information. Authorities also found some 85 pounds of processed marijuana, multiple fire arms, and nearly 27 thousand dollars in cash were also reportedly found. Ogle was arrested and taken to the Butte County Jail.  

2 Large Pot Grows Busted By Butte County Sheriffs Deputies

 The first at Gold View Court on Tuesday yielded almost 800 pot plants and led to the arrest of two Sacramento men. The other on Summit Avenue netted 680 plants and also led to the arrest of two Los Angeles men. According to the Sheriff's Office, all the marijuana plants were eradicated.

More Americans Are Planning To Hit The Road This Summer

This from GasBuddy dot com which conducted a survey which compared summer travel plans this year to 2015. Over 75 percent said they would be traveling this summer which is a about a 2 percent increase from last year with most of those surveyed saying the would do so by car.

 

A large reason for this is lower gas prices. The current national average is at about 2 dollars and 23 cents, that's almost 50 cents per gallon lower than this time a year ago. Here in California the average price is over a dollar per gallon lower than in 2015.   

Raised Water Table Hampering Road Project In Orland

 The project to rebuild Papst Avenue north of Highway 32 needs more time because of the raised water table from this winter's rain and the unusual soil types in the area. An Orland city official says they have to make sure that the foundation is sound before they can begin rebuilding the road.    

 

Couch Burning Will Be Treated Harshly By Chico Fire This Week

With graduation this coming weekend, Chico's Fire Department is letting it be known couch burning will not be tolerated. They cite a risk of fire to nearby structures. Those caught will reportedly face felony charges. To help combat furniture burning, officials will host a furniture recycling program from May 24 to May 26 from 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. 

 

Man Driving Erraticly In Chico Leads To His Arrest

 A man driving a Ford F-250 pick-up truck was reportedly seen speeding and driving erratically in the area of Greenwich Drive and South Hampton Drive around 5:30 pm Tuesday. According to police, the man was allegedly seen knocking over garbage cans and almost hitting a group of children playing in the street. The unidentified man then reportedly drove his truck into another truck parked along the street. Police arrived and arrested the man for Driving Under the Influence. No one was reported injured in the incident.      

 

Oroville City Council OK’s First Step For Increase In Sales Tax

The council voted unanimously Tuesday for an initial approval for a 1 percent sales tax for public safety. If the council approves the measure in June then it will go on the November ballot for voters to decide. 

 

The one-cent sales tax increase is estimated to generate over 3 million dollars a year and would be used to hire 9 police officers, five firefighters, and various support staff as well as fill other law enforcement and emergency personal positions.

Suspect Caught After Early Morning Burglary In Chico

A passerby reported seeing a man wearing a dark hoodie running away from Gates Resale on Park Avenue allegedly carrying several riffles around 3:30 am. Several officers arrived and found riffles missing in the store as well as discovering a hole in the roof. The suspect, identified as 25-year-old Weston Davis was found hiding in a trailer at a nearby car dealership. Officers reportedly found the riffles stashed in the bed of a pickup parked nearby. According to police, Davis has an extensive criminal history and was out on bail for another commercial burglary.

Teen Arrested Distributing Drugs At Chico School

Campus officials at Chico Jr. High School reported that a 14-year-old male was allegedly passing out Oxycodone prescription tablets to students around 2:30 Friday afternoon. More than five students reportedly took the pills. The 14-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with furnishing drugs and child endangerment. 

 

Domestic Violence Call Lands Lakehead Man In Jail

A domestic violence incident lands a Lakehead man in jail on attempted murder charges. Christian Seteroff was arrested early Friday after an incident on the 19 hundred block of Oak Knoll Drive Thursday night. His girlfriend told authorities he had choked her several times and said he was going to kill her. A search turned up nothing, but authorities captured him about 8:15 Friday morning. 

 

Chico Man Accused Of Killing His Wife Gets Life In Prison

That was the verdict Friday for 29-year-old Zir Weems for the March killing of his wife, Angelica. Weems reportedly gets the life sentence with the possibility of parole after 25 years. He received the maximum sentence under the law. He was convicted of killing his wife on March 18th. Her body was found along the Sacramento River. 

 

Revised CA Budget

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Gov. Jerry Brown is scheduled to release his revised state budget today (Friday) amid concerns about declining revenue and mounting pressure from some of his fellow Democrats to increase the flow of money to people struggling to get by. Brown proposed a $122.6 billion spending plan in January that favored savings, debt payments and deferred maintenance over restoring funding for safety net programs. By law, about half the state's spending goes to K-12 education and higher education.

Defensible Space Zones

With fire threats here, fire officials are reminding us about defensible space zones. Creating defensible spaces are important to protecting your home from wildfires. Defensible zones are the buffers that you create between a building and the trees, grass, shrubs or any wildland area that surrounds it. These spaces are used to slow or even stop the spread of a wildfire. Make sure to remove all dead vegetation, trim trees reguarly and remove branches that may hang over a roof.

The cause of a Chico grass fire has been released

Someone using welding equipment may have led to a 21 acre vegetation fire in Chico Tuesday.Fire officials announced Thursday that someone using welding equipment on a gate of one of the homes in the Oak Canyon subdivision may have sparked the blaze. The fire was reported just before 1 pm Wednesday afternoon and burned around 21 acres of grass in the Summit Terrace Ridge area. According to Cal Fire, no evacuations were ordered and no structures were damaged.   

Butte County Authorities Are Looking For A Suspicious Man Seen Talking To Children

A 9-year-old girl was approached by a man, in the area of Mount Ida and Pioneer Trail in Oroville who allegedly asked her if she needed a ride. The girl was able to get away and arrived home to tell her grandfather who contacted the sheriff's office. The girl told deputies that the man had a grey beard with glasses and that he had a box-style van. The case in currently under investigation. 

Gridley Fire Leads To Arrest For Arson

 Cal Fire Officials announced they're taken 22-year-old Jose Negrete into custody for setting a ranch on fire about 2:30 Tuesday morning. Firefighters got the call of a structure fire on the 900 block of Alexander Avenue. They arrived to find a renovated barn, which contained two residences and a shop, fully involved. Four residents made their way to safety before firefighters arrived. A subsequent investigation found the fire was deliberately set--so they arrested Negrete on suspicion of arson. 

Shasta County Authorities Need Help With ID Of Man Found Dead In Carson City

Saturday morning Redding Police received a report of a death at 2155 Park Marina Drive. They say 39-year-old Lawrence Simmons of Carson City, Nevada was the man. But authorities need assistance in locating next of kin or anyone that knows Simmons. He reportedly has a tattoo on his right shoulder of an Eagle and the quote "Battle Born Carson City". A post mortem exam is scheduled for later this week, but the cause of death awaits toxicology results.

 

Bruce's Corner: A lawsuit raises questions about the legality of the fight against ISIS.

It started with a soldier's lawsuit. 28-year-old army officer Captain Nathan Smith wants Congressional approval of the fight against ISIS. Smith says he supports the fight, but his conscience bothers him and he wants President Obama to seek Congressional authorization. His legal challenge comes after the death of the third American service member in the fight. Obama has long argued that he has all the authority he needs after Congress authorizes fighting after 9-11, but critics say the President is stretching the 9-11 authorization too far. One of Smith's defense attorneys has argued the war against ISIS is illegal, and the President must withdraw after 60 days if Congress has not authorized the operation to continue. But Administration officials say Congress can't get anything done, so it's better if the President goes it alone.

Yuba City Man Sentenced Child Pornography Case

26-year-old Nathan Penner was sentenced to 16 years and three months after pleading guilty last November. He also must reportedly serve a lifetime of supervised release. Penner's plea involved admitted to producing sexually explicit images of a five year old girl. That was back in the fall of 2012. 

 

Motorist Killed In Oroville Collison

A vehicle collided with a tree at the intersection of Lower Wyandotte Road and District Center Drive around 4 pm Thursday. The Butte County emergency medical team arrived and attempted lifesaving efforts, but the victim reportedly died at the scene. The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.  

 

Officials Believe Weekend Storms Could Raise Lake Oroville Levels Even Higher

 As of Thursday Lake Oroville is around 96 percent full. According to the Department of Water Resources lake levels are at 8 feet below the 900 foot mark which they say is considered full. The lake levels have reportedly been stable over the past few weeks, but officials say the wet weather this weekend could add a little more.   

 

Road Rage Incident Leads To Arrest In Oroville

A woman was driving a Corvette on Forbestown Road when she allegedly ran a Chevy Tahoe off the road. According to the CHP, the driver of the Tahoe got back on the road and allegedly got in front of the Corvette causing the woman to stop. The man got out of his SUV and reportedly jumped onto the hood of the Corvette. He then started to cut into the soft top roof of the car with a knife. The woman told authorities that she feared for her life at that point and began driving causing the man slide off. He was treated at the hospital for road rash and was arrested.

Suspicious Looking Device Found At Chico DMV Turns Out Harmless

 

 A black object was found at the main entrance of the DMV office off of Cohasset Road before 9 am Thursday morning. Authorities arrived and evacuated the DMV and a section of the nearby Butte County Behavioral Health office. Authorities x-rayed the device which turned out to be a cooler and it was deemed to be NOT harmful. The area was cleared just before 11 am. 

 

Another Chico Community Safety Meeting Being Held This Week

This month's meeting will be for residents and businesses of downtown Chico. The meeting is open to the public and will be held at the old Municipal Building at 441 Main Street from 9 to 10 am Thursday morning. 

 

The Community Safety Meetings are hosted each mouth at a different areas of Chico by the Chico Police Department and Team Chico. Officials say that it's a way for community members and the police department to connect with each other. 

 

Another Extension For Chico Scrap Metal

The City Council voted 4 to 3 to allow the business to stay at its current location for the time being. That's on East 20th Street. Things could change if a referendum is submitted.  It could also change if the council amends its decision at the next hearing. Chico Scrap Metal was ordered to relocate 10 years ago after the adoption of the Chapman-Mulberry neighborhood plan, but the scrap yard has had two extensions to stay since that time.

There Will Be NO Roundabouts For The Esplanade

That's the word from the Chico City Council, which narrowly voted to outlaw roundabouts for two intersections of the historic street. The council also voted 6 to 1 to wait until next year to make any decisions on the Esplanade Safety Plan. In the mean time, the city staff will look at other ways to improve the safety of the intersections of Memorial Way & East First Avenue and West Sacramento and West Lincoln avenues.       

Teacher's Assistant Out After Being Arrested For Inappropriate Contact With Student

A teacher's assistant in Corning is out on bond after being arrested for having an improper relationship with a 14-year-old student. 30-year-old Fernando Barrera was put on administrative leave by the District after suspicion. It's reported Barrera sent lewd photos of himself to the student over social media. The victim's parents reportedly told police of the incidents.

 

Redding Man Killed During Argument ID'd

34-year-old James Patterson is the man authorities say died during a shooting Sunday night. Reports indicate Patterson and two other men went to the home of a Carl Smedley in Redding. When Patterson and Smedley got into an altercation, Smedley fired twice at Patterson in what he says was an act of self defense. No arrests yet in the incident that happened about 6:30 Sunday night off Peach Lane in Redding. Anyone with information is urged to contact Shasta County authorities.

 

Officers Find Bleeding Man Wandering North Chico

 Officers arrived to East Avenue near Floral Avenue after receiving reports of a man with a laceration on his neck before 8 pm Monday night. Officers located the unidentified 45-year-old man walking on East Avenue bleeding profusely from his face and neck. The man was not able to tell the officers what had happened to him so officers followed the blood trail to a residence where they found evidence that a firearm had been discharged. The man was taken to the hospital where he was able to explain that he had accidentally shot himself while handling the firearm.

 

Big Rig Collides With SUV On I-5 In Red Bluff

 The collision happened on 1-5 near Antelope Boulevard and Adobe Road at the Sacramento River Bridge around 11:15 Monday morning. A Chevy SUV was reportedly was stopped and partially on the northbound lane of the bridge due to a mechanical problem. The driver of the big rig reportedly could not see the SUV and rear ended it. The collision caused both vehicles to go up into flames. Authorities say two people suffered major injuries while two others suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the hospital. One man reportedly suffered minor injuries but didn't need medical attention. The northbound lanes were reopened to traffic around 5 pm.       

Chico Police Investigating Brush Fire

The fire was reported in Lindo Channel near the Highway 99 overpass before 11:30 Monday morning. Fire crews were able to contain the blaze to a 50 by 50 foot area. This is the 2nd reported fire at Lindo Channel in less than a week. The cause of the fire is under investigation. 

 

Police Investigating Single Vehicle Crash Near Chico Apartment Complex

A driver of a Lincoln Mark VII was northbound on Forest Avenue when he reportedly went off the road and sideswiped a tree near the Amanda Place Apartments before 4 pm Monday. Witnesses told officers that the driver and the passenger got out of the car and allegedly ran off. Witnesses described the driver as a white male with long hair and the passenger as an Asian male. Police believe that the car may have been stolen. Authorities are treating the crash as a hit-and-run investigation.     

 

Authorities Investigating Shooting In Anderson

The victim was reportedly found on the ground outside of the 7-11 on North Street after 6:30 Sunday night. A man at the store reportedly attempted to help stop the bleeding from the victim's wound before emergency crews arrived at the scene. The unidentified victim was taken to a local hospital, where he reportedly has died of his injuries. Police are currently interviewing witnesses and a person they believe to have been the shooter. 

 

Chico City Council Delaying Decisions About Changes To The Esplanade

The City staff is recommending the council to hold off on any decisions for the intersections of East & West First Avenue, West Sacramento Avenue, West Lincoln Avenue and Memorial Way. This comes after a public outcry to purposed changes to the Esplanade. An archaeologist is expected to tell the council to delay any more decisions until the corridor has been examined for entry into the National Register of Historical Places.
